A NOTE ABOUT THIS SERIES: I mistakenly left this 7” Phillips Jazz Series EP off of yesterday’s survey of the other seven that I own. If I attempt to collect the whole series (and I have yet to find a complete cataloging on the internet), that most likely falls far short of a redeemable cash cow. For one thing, I don’t care about scrawls of previous ownership or folds and dents, and they are repackaged tunes from an original album (what the itchy collector salivates over). Speaking for myself, collecting them, wherever they land, is a matter of marketplace fetishism. I like holding them in my hands. And I listen to the them, repeatedly. Which brings me to this point, about buying and listening to jazz records (no matter the condition or the low-balled price): even if I’m not enamored with the tune, I inevitably learn something. Connect the dots, as it were. BUT TODAY we have a stellar tune lined up, as performed by Gerry Mulligan and Art Farmer. Practically a symphony, a chamber music ensemble or whatever highbrow analogy you apply plus the syncopated beat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSfQuIN7GWo
